Spring has definitely arrived and with it the village hedgehogs have woken up. They are great nocturnal friends to the gardeners amongst us as they enjoy eating all the garden pests. We would encourage you to consider the following to provide further support for these adorable and endangered creatures –
• Make a hedgehog home – this can be as simple as leaving areas of the garden wild, with piles of leaves, logs or compost as these make attractive nest sites. Or you could consider constructing a simple shelter
• Avoid using pesticides in your garden as that kills their favourite food and can poison hedgehogs
• Check under hedges and bushes before using strimmers and mowers to prevent serious injuries to hedgehogs
• Create a hedgehog highway – hedgehogs can travel around a mile every night so they may need help to get in and out of your garden. They only need a small space approx. 13x13cm so you could cut a small hole in the bottom of your fence
• Provide fresh water and food for them – they like tinned cat or dog food and crushed cat /dog biscuits but never feed them milk or bread.
